RomansOver 400 years the south of the Netherlands made a part of one of the greatest civilizations of antiquity: the Roman Empire. The landscape wast enriched with many elements of Roman culture, such as urban roads and bridges. The boundary of the Roman Empire was the Rhine. Nijmegen was the middle of the region and was the first, oldest and largest Roman city in our country. There are still elements from the Roman era, like the Roman aqueduct in Berg en Dal and the Roman camp in Nijmegen.
The Middle AgesThe Middle Ages in our region started in the 8th century.
The many castles in the region tell many stories about the Duchy of Guelders and the Brothers of Limburgh. During the annual "Brothers of Limburgh festival really imagine yourself back in the Middle Ages. Do you own an iPhone or iPad? You can find many more medieval in Nijmegen and surroundings!
Liberation Route and Operation Market GardenThe most recent timeline, but not the least exciting.
The Liberation Route follows the path that the Allies walked during liberation of Europe, from Normandy to Berlin from Nijmegen. The Liberation Route lets you experience what is happening in 1944-1945 around Arnhem and Nijmegen.
There are 23 marked boulders at various locations throughout the region, the so-called Audio Sites. You can listen to an audio report at each location about the impressive experiences of one or more persons during '44-'45.Combine your listening experience with a visit to the example of National Liberation Museum in Groesbeek Canadian cemetery.
